The Solar Design Company sells, provides technical support for and trains users in GeoT*Sol, T*Sol and PV*Sol simulation software. This software assists users in designing and optimising heat pump, solar thermal and PV systems. It takes into account a range of variables, allows components to be compared easily and produces precise predictions on factors such as financial payback and optimum borehole depth. The programs produce project reports for customers including system outputs and configurations. This allows customers to make informed decisions about their investment. The company also sells a bespoke range of site surveying tools and aims to educate installers and end users in how to supply customers with accurate, reliable information and create optimised systems rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. The Solar Design Company Ltd was founded in 1993 by Chris Laughton, Managing Director. He supervises a small team of people located at an old refurbished slate quarry railway building. Chris Laughton also produces specialist technical editorials for trade publications and is a well known author and lecturer.

The requirement was not only for heating but also cooling. The second system was installed at a recreation centre and provides underfloor heating to a restaurant and toilet block as well as the warden's first floor flat.
